Academic WorldQuest Lacey Rosenblum
Academic WorldQuest is an annual team-based competition testing competitors' knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, and culture. The World Affairs Councils of America started the national competition in Washington, DC in March 2003. Participants come from high schools that work with the World Affairs Council network. The competition is played between 4-person teams who answer rounds of questions projected by PowerPoint onto a screen. The questions test their knowledge of current affairs, world leaders, geography, recent history, flags, international organizations, countries, regions, the world economy, culture, religion, and more. A full competition is 100 questions, 10 rounds of 10 questions per round. The winning team is the team with the highest number of right answers. A team consists of four students. Bridge Club (Junior) Sharon Thoemke
Naples Junior Bridge is a non-profit organization which champions the efforts of the American Contract Bridge League to teach the Game of Bridge to the Youth and Junior members of the Naples, Florida Community”. Ms. Doreen MacMillan is the organizer of the club and Mr. Bruce Greenspan is the ABTA Master Bridge teacher. The goal of the club is to train members in the game of duplicate bridge with the hope of competing in tournaments. Bridge is not only a lifelong entertaining leisure activity, but research has shown that young people who learn bridge perform better in school and particularly in mathematics.

The C.O.R.E. Society is a group of selected students who have shared beliefs for the purpose of bettering the Naples High School community by uniting together against all forms of harmful substances. The C.O.R.E. Society offers fellow students drug free alternatives and the support needed to maintain a healthy and safe lifestyle, with the hope that all students will be responsible drug and alcohol free citizens.

Envirothon

The NHS Envirothon program is part of the Canon Envirothon, an annual competition in which teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The teams, each consisting of five high school-aged students, exercise their training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on four universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue.

NHS Envirothon meets every Monday during lunch in room 3-101 from August through December. Competition begins in early December and continues through March. Lunch meetings are spent learning the hands-on skills necessary for Envirothon. Contact Mrs. Lawson in room 3-101 if you are interested.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

FCA Campus ministry is the largest Christian campus ministry in America. It is initiated by students with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to be impacted for Jesus Christ through fellowship, teamwork, fun, and competition.

Functions: Bible Studies, Assembly Programs, Chapel Programs, Volunteer/Service Projects, and Student Sports Competitions.

FCA’s purpose, at its absolute core, is to combine people’s passion for sports with their passion for Christ, and teach them that those two worlds don’t have to be separate. FCA wants to give meaning to the athletic nature that all of us are born with and use it for something that stretches beyond sports.

The purpose of the fishing club is to promote the sport. We aim to educate NHS students on the techniques and safe responsible practices of fishing. Members enjoy guest speakers/seminars, fishing tournaments, and charity events.

The Fishing Club meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month in Room 11-211.

FFEA (Florida Future Educators of America) is an organization  that gives students the opportunity for students to explore teaching. We help students gain a realistic understanding of education and the teaching profession. The club has many opportunities for volunteering and learning. The club is not limited to those who want to go into the teaching profession, but all people who like to work with children. The club attends a state academic conference every year in Orlando and offers many opportunities for anybody who may be interested.

FFEA meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month in our club sponsor’s room, 2-112.

 Golden Girls is a group of individuals who are interested in building and displaying school spirit. We meet and paint banners, make signs, brainstorm for ideas that can and might be used in our pep assemblies! We meet once a week to paint and design banners. You do not have to attend all meetings as we will welcome you and your ideas at any meeting.  All NHS students are welcome! Go Eagles!

Our mission is to enable children of all means and needs to be able to participate in a variety of sports in an effort to help them discover their interests and talents, as well as give them a sense of personal growth, development, achievement and confidence, which they may carry with them throughout life.

Our objectives are to collect new and gently used sporting equipment, clean and organize the sporting equipment, distribute sporting equipment to children in need, help kids grow through sports and earn community service hours.

Color Guard: The Color Guard club at NHS is responsible for presenting the National and State flags at football games as well as school and community events. The team practices on Mondays from 2:15 to 3:45.

Drill Team: The Drill Team at NHS is a competitive team that competes against other schools at county and state level. They compete in marching as well as rifle spinning. The team practices on Wednesdays from 2:15 to 4:30.

Rifle Team: The Rifle Team at NHS is a club that practices on gun safety/marksmanship. The team fires daisy rifles after school at the NHS rifle range and competes at the county and state level. The team practices Thursdays from 2:15 to 4:30.

Raiders: The Raiders Team at NHS is bases on the US Army Ranger competition and can be very physically demanding. The team competes against local and state schools in various activities to include and physical fitness test, first aide, land navigation, and rope bridge. The team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 to 4:30 as well as Saturdays from 8:00 to 11:00.

Academic Team: The Academic Team at NHS is similar to NHS Scholar Bowl competition based on the academic curriculum (ACT / SAT type of questions. The team meets Wednesdays at lunch and competes at the state and national level.

Cyber Patriot Team: The Cyber Patriot Team at NHS is the premier national high school cyber defense competition. The team competition has a tournament-style tiered structure with a series of web-based competition. The team meets Thursdays at lunch.

Leadership Team: The Leadership Team at NHS is similar to NHS Scholar Bowl competition based on the JROTC curriculum. The team meets Wednesdays at lunch and competes at the state and national level.
Venture Civitan Monica Rodriguez

Junior Civitan is an international organization of community service clubs, designed by Civitan International and supported by the local sponsoring Neapolitan Civitan Club to enhance leadership and community service skills in teens. The Naples Junior Civitan Club is an active and caring group of teens who receive credit for volunteer hours and qualify for Civitan scholarships. They make a difference in our community with their local projects and make a difference around the world with their support of medical research, environmental projects as well as social awareness projects. www.FloridaJuniorCivitan.org

The Junior Statesmen mission is to strengthen American democracy by educating and preparing high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society. In the student-run Junior State participants learn statesmanship as they engage in political discourse through weekly club debate forums and at the Fall State Convention. At Winter Congress, in Washington, D.C., students propose and promote their own legislation in House and Senate committees. Through participation in JSA, students cultivate democratic leadership skills, challenge one another to think critically, advocate their own opinions, develop respect for opposing views, and learn to rise above self-interest to promote the public good. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. Today, Key Club exists on more than 5,000 high school campuses, primarily in the United States and Canada.

Kids CAN Charlie Freydberg

Kids Cancer Alliance of Naples (KidsCAN) is devoted to improving the quality of life of local individuals and families affected by cancer.

Our Mission is 3-fold:
1. Provide assistance for the funding of a Collier County Pediatric Treatment Facility -- at this time parents must transport their children to Lee County, Miami or Tampa for treatment.
2. Send children who are in treatment with cancer along with adults in treatment to a week-end getaway for relaxation and a chance to temporarily put aside their concerns and concentrate on having a good time.
3. Provide assistance to families with children with cancer to attend college or secondary education--develop a scholarship program so that college is still attainable while in treatment.

The Know Your County Government program is a great opportunity to learn about the services and job opportunities that the Collier County provides for our community. The program includes visits to the Sheriff’s department, domestic animal services, and emergency management services as well as a Collier County Commission meeting followed by lunch with the Commissioners.  Recruiting will begin after winter break.
Laureate Naomi Rothring
The overall goal of the Advanced Placement Laureate Program is to provide a rigorous academic course of study and to challenge and recognize high-achieving students. Although centered on Advanced Placement courses, the program encompasses other activities that enhance a student’s general background and preparation for higher education. The program assumes each candidate’s exceptional motivation, aptitude, and achievement while encouraging high levels of integration of ideas and application of skills. The Laureate Club has formed to coach and support the students as they work toward the Laureate Diploma or Laureate Certificate.

Mock Trial

The Collier County Mock Trial competition is sponsored by the Collier County Bar Association and the school district and is held during the first weekend in February. Students in grades 9 - 12 may compete as part of a 6 – 8 member team. Naples High attempts to field two teams in the competition. Community attorneys generously volunteer their time to assist in the legal preparation of the teams. Winning teams then compete in a regional competition sponsored by the Twentieth Judicial Circuit Court and the winner of that event continues to compete at the State Level. The Collier County Mock Trial Program offers substantial scholarships to the winning students and has been held since 1983. The Mock Trial case can be found at www.flrea.org

Model United Nations Lacey Rosenblum

Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, current events, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In standard Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats and participate in a simulated session of a intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

Mu Alpha Theta (Math) Angela Jolliff
Mu Alpha Theta is an international mathematics honor society and competition club. Currently, the Naples High chapter has 85 members in 9th through 12th grades. Students must be enrolled in honors level math courses and have a cumulative math GPA of at least 3.0 to be eligible for membership. The activities of the club include weekly practices in six divisions, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, PreCalculus, Calculus, and Statistics. There are bi-weekly, whole club meetings, which include team practices. Since the primary goal of the organization is participation in regional, state, and national mathematics competitions, the members also participate in several fundraising activities to pay travel and registration expenses. The club is rich in traditions which include a holiday celebration in December to which many graduates return from college, and an end of season tribute to graduating seniors, at which the officers for the following year are elected. National Honor Society is an academic and service based organization that promotes scholarship, leadership, service and high character standards. Membership is open to any junior or senior who attains and maintains a 4.0 weighted GPA . Members are expected to be active in campus activities and to do 75 hours of community service before they graduate. Applications for admission are distributed in the fall for current juniors and seniors. Meetings are held the first and third Fridays of the month and are held in the NHS Auditorium.

Phanatical Phans of Physics Corey Stewart
 This club is for students who want to learn more about the world around them by working on projects and contraptions.  There may be opportunities to work on different competitions around the community as well. This year we are planning on making a bed of nails, a solar “death ray”, and a “wave pendulum” consisting of 15 different sized pendulums that will move in and out of phase creating patterns.  Anyone with an interest in Physics is welcome.

 The purpose of the Photography Club:
    1. To allow students the opportunity to meet, discuss, and practice their photography skills in interesting locations and environments;
    2. Collaborate to produce powerful images; and
    3. Experiment with advanced camera functions

Club meets: 1st/3rd Wednesday of the month in room 6-109; Meets once-a-month off campus after school to take photos.

Open to all students, at all levels –students don’t need to be in a photography class; must have their own digital camera.

Relay for Life Amanda Armocida

Dedicated volunteers are committed to fighting cancer in their communities year-round, but once a year, they gather at Relay For Life to celebrate survivors and caregivers, remember loved ones lost and to gain inspiration for the fight.  The Naples High Relay for Life team raises money for the American Cancer Society, which culminates in the Relay event held on April 19th, 2013.

Each of the more than 4,800 Relays nationwide is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags with the goal of keeping on person on the track at all times.

Fundraising activities include Dress for the Cure, a GINORMOUS Relay garage sale held in January, Relay nights at participating restaurants, Yankee Candle Sales, outright donations, sales of coupon books, car washes, raffles and sales on the night of Relay.  Come on out and support us at these events, or contact Amanda Armocida to get involved!

Scholar Bowl Deborah Cantor

The Scholar Bowl Team represents Naples High by competing in academic “Jeopardy”-style competitions throughout the year.  Questions are taken from the core subject areas.  Practice is every Friday after school until 3 pm.  Below are the three major competitions that the club participates in:

  1. The Collier County Scholar Bowl Tournament has schools compete against each other all year and culminates in a televised top-three teams finals.  6 students from the county will go on to compete in the State Tournament held at Disney World.
  2. The Knowledge Master Open is a national competition that takes place twice a year for 2 hours via the computer.  Teams that score high enough qualify to go to Nationals.
  3. The A-Team Challenge is a televised single-elimination tournament comprised of 32+ teams from Collier, Lee, and Charlotte counties.

Naples High School's Rocinante Chapter of the Spanish Honor Society was started in 1986. To be eligible, students must have at least a 3.5 GPA in Spanish classes up through the Spanish 3 level and be enrolled in Spanish 4 or Advanced Placement Spanish Language. Students who are native speakers of Spanish must have at least a 3.5 GPA in two Spanish classes and be enrolled in Spanish 4 or Advanced Placement Spanish Language.

The society purpose is to encourage the study of the Spanish language and enhance student appreciation of Hispanic culture.

The Student Government Association represents all students at Naples High School.  S.G.A. provides an opportunity for all students to actively contribute to the academic and social climate of the school campus.

Naples High School encourages students to participate in the governance of the campus community.  One avenue for this participation is through the election of student leaders.  The elected officers of the student body, include each Classes’ President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.  S.G.A. has open membership in the way of Class Representatives.  Any Naples High School student may represent their class at weekly S.G.A. meetings as a Class Representative however Class Representatives are unable to vote on issues and motions that are presented at meetings. 

S.G.A. meets weekly to discuss and address issues of campus concern.  Unless otherwise noted, weekly meetings are open to all students and other members of the Naples High School community.  All students are encouraged to attend S.G.A.’s weekly meetings, to voice opinions, or to listen and observe.

S.G.A. is conducted by the S.G.A. President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer all of whom are elected by Naples High School students.  The S.G.A. Officers serve as the primary Student Government Association liaisons with the faculty, staff and administration of Naples High School and the greater Naples Community.

Video Production Club Tom Rife

A newcomer to the lineup of clubs and organizations at Naples High is the ENN Video Club. Just getting off the ground, the club will consist of members who are experienced videographers, editors and producers. All members must be at least at the TV Production 2 level to be eligible. The ENN Video Club plans to meet the first Thursday of each month during lunch in Room  5-105, which is the NHS television production classroom/studio.

 Membership in the club will allow students to branch out and display their creative skills beyond the everyday news and feature packages that air on the daily program. Members also will work with administrators, NHS teachers and coaches to produce relevant  video packages that might be requested.

The ENN Video Club is being supervised by Mr. Tom Rife, who is the television production and journalism  instructor at NHS. He also oversees the Eagle News Network’s  live, daily news show known as “News from the Nest.”

 There is a $10 membership fee to help offset production costs. For additional information, contact Mr. Rife at rifet@collierschools.com.

The purpose of the organization is to instill a sense of class and school spirit, unity and pride in students. Through the Student Government Association, the freshmen are given leadership roles as they select a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. The officers promote unity through participation in class-wide activities that sponsor a feeling of class spirit.
